How to make a Natural Hand Sanitiser

How to Make a Natural Hand Sanitiser

These can be scary and overwhelming times we find ourselves in just now but here at The Wrens Nest we are doing our best to remain upbeat and positive about things and I am taking this time to indulge in things I love to do. So, we will be getting out in nature as much as we can. Its a great time to spot emerging Spring plants and flowers and we will be spending lots of time in the garden. Well, as much as the weather will allow anyway.

Our Happy Place - out and about in the woods!

I do run my own, small, business though so we will have to leave the house and I will have to go to the workshop most days so we are being as careful and sensible as we can be. Hand washing is the first and best line of defense against viruses but if you have to go out of the house this is not always possible. We made a big batch of natural hand sanitiser yesterday and have little bottles of it all over the place - in the house, the car, the workshop - and I thought I would share the recipe with you as it seems it cannot be bought anywhere at this stage!

Its super simple and easy to make and won’t take you more than 10 minutes once you have all your ingredients.

*Disclaimer* I am not a trained chemist nor has this sanitiser been tested in any way. I am not claiming that is is effective in killing the Covid-19 virus. It is just the sanitiser that we are using ourselves at home.

Adding your Aloe Vera Gel

Ingredients

2 TBSPs aloe vera gel

6 TBSPs alcohol

10 drops essential oils ( I used a mix of tea tree, lemon and orange for their anti bacterial, anti microbial & antiviral properties)

Put all the ingredients into a bowl and mix until the gel becomes opaque in colour. Pop into a bottle with a pump or a squeezy bottle to use.

Anti bacterial and anti viral essential oils, such as tea tree, lemon, orange, rosemary & eucalyptus will add extra germ busting power to your gel.

Notes

*Rubbing alcohol is best. The important thing is that the alcohol is at least 60% for it to be effective.

**By adding the essential oils you are giving your sanitiser extra germ busting power. You will find the essential oils above in most chemists and health shops. Make sure when buying essential oils that it is 100% essential oil as they are sometimes blended oils.

***Pure aloe vera gel is easy to come by. Try your local chemist or it is readily available online.

Your gel is ready when all the ingredients are well mixed and opaque in colour.

I hope you find this post useful. Remember hand washing is the first and best line of defense and if you use soaps made using germ busting essential oils , like the ones we sell here at Naturally at the Wrens Nest, your hands wont be as dry and chapped as using regular soap. We sell a gorgeous hand cream too, also with germ busting lemon & Lavender essential oils.

I also made a video last Summer showing you how to make your own Natural Room Freshener Spray. You’ll find it HERE and you could also adjust that to use the anti bacterial & anti viral essential oils mentioned above.

Stay well and Safe and enjoy this enforced time out with your family and get out and explore the nature on your doorstep.
